What does precise mean?

exact and specific.

How the story shows the meaning

The first instruction leaves both the object and its destination unclear. Naming the red block and the second slot supplies the details the listener needs to act.

precise in a sentence

  • Instead of “add some water,” the recipe gives a precise amount: 200 milliliters.
  • A precise instruction tells the builder to place the small yellow triangle above the blue square.
  • Give a precise meeting time, such as 4:15 p.m., so everyone knows when to arrive.

Choose the details someone needs to act or understand. A long sentence is not necessarily precise. “Precisely” is the related adverb and can describe doing something exactly.

Which instruction is most precise?

Read the answer and explanation

Place the blue notebook on the top shelf. Correct. This identifies the object and its destination.

Try two more questions

Explain your thinking, then open a sample answer. These are extra practice examples to use after watching.

1. Rewrite “Meet me later near the building” so a friend knows where and when to meet.

Show sample answer

One possible answer is “Meet me at 4:15 p.m. beside the library’s front door.” It gives a specific time and place.

2. Why might “Add exactly seven” still be an unclear instruction?

Show sample answer

It does not say seven of what, or where to add them. A number alone does not supply every needed detail.
