Historic vs. historical: which word fits?
Use historic when you want to emphasize importance in history. Use historical when you mean connected with the past or the study of history. A recent event can be historic; an old object is not automatically historic.

Two words, two useful meanings

These words sometimes overlap in published writing. This worksheet practices the common distinction above. The major change explains its importance. The day and age of the microphone do not.

The choice depends on what the writer wants to emphasize. A document can fit both descriptions.
Take it into a passage
A display about the town bridge
A class prepared a display about a bridge that connected two neighborhoods for the first time. Historical maps showed the long route residents once took to visit each other. A newspaper from the opening day called the bridge a historic achievement because it made schools and shops easier to reach. The class also displayed an old lunch tin found nearby. Its age was interesting, but the class had no evidence that it played an important part in the town’s history.

Why does the passage use historical for the maps and historic for the bridge opening?
